Erzsébet Szőnyi

Erzsébet Szőnyi ( born April 25, 1924 in Budapest) is a Hungarian music educator and composer who lives in Budapest. She has contributed significantly to the spread of the Kodály method.

Life

Szőnyi studied from 1942 to 1947 at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, among others, in János Viski (composition), Ernő Szegedi (piano), János Ferencsik ( choral music ) as well as Lajos Bárdos, Zoltán Vásárhelyi, Zoltán Kodály, Bence Szabolcsi and Leó Weiner. She then studied at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique in Paris and met Tony Aubin, Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen.

In Budapest it was 1948-1981 high school teacher and director in the 1960s, the Department of teacher education. During this time she wrote her " methods of music reading and writing music ." This work was fundamental to the dissemination of the Kodály method. This they effected as organizer of the Conference of the " International Society for Music Education " ISME in 1964 in Budapest, their advisory boards and Board was regularly elected 1964-1974.

Szőnyi has a large number of works composed and brought to the stage. She wrote mostly vocal works, as well as nine operas, musicals, four, five oratorios and three ballets.

For her compositional work, she was awarded the Liszt Prize in 1947, 1959 Erkel Prize ( Erkel Ferenc díj ), 1995 and 2004 the Bartók Pásztory Price ( Bartók Béla Pásztory Ditta - díj ), the Kodály Prize 2001. Szőnyi an honorary doctorate from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Since 1992 she has been a member of the Széchenyi Academy of the Arts ( " Széchenyi Irodalmi és Művészeti Akadémia ").
