Es Baluard

It Baluart is the new Museum of the city of Palma de Mallorca for modern and contemporary art.

In the Catalan language baluard means " stronghold " and thus refers to the location and the historical function of the at this point originally located building. On behalf Baluard also the importance of a bastion of art resonates.

Location

The museum is located in a corner bastion of the Renaissance city walls, on the Paseo Maritimo of Palma de Mallorca on the Balearic island of Mallorca.

Description

The museum was built as a new building inside an old fortification of the Renaissance city walls. Known as Baluart de Sant Pere fortress in the old town of Palma was in a state of disrepair. The willingness of the municipality to provide this bastion for the construction of a museum of modern and contemporary art available, sparked the space required for the art collections and contributed to the urban dynamic of the entire zone at.

The museum with a total area of ​​5,000 m² is connected at various levels by different routes with the city. It is spread over three floors, the different levels are connected by ramps, balconies and galleries, skylights allow daylight one. One route leads from the city by the Porta de Santa Catalina with the viewpoint towards the sea and from there to the Sant Pere and the shore Paseo Marítimo. About another way to get to the top area of the city wall, from which the bay of Palma and the museum itself can be overlooked. Thus, a visit to the museum allows the artistic appeal at the same time visiting a historical monument, open terraces whose spectacular views over the city and the bay, to Bellver Castle and the Cathedral.
