Escalante Department

The department Escalante is located in the southeast of the province of Chubut in southern Argentina and is one of 15 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered on the north by the departments Paso de Indios, Martyrs and Florentino Ameghino, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the province of Santa Cruz and to the west by the department of Sarmiento.

The capital of the department Escalante is Comodoro Rivadavia.

The Departamente was named after Dr. Wenceslao Escalante, a Minister of Agriculture during the presidency of Julio A. Roca.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population increased from 143 689 inhabitants (2001) to 171 097 inhabitants in 2005.
