Escanaba is a city and the county seat of Delta County in the U.S. state of Michigan. Escanaba covers an area of 42.8 km ² and is located on the Upper Peninsula ( Upper Peninsula ) in the north of the state. With 13,140 inhabitants, it is after Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie 's third largest city on the Upper Peninsula. It is named for the Escanaba River, which flows north of the city in the Little Bay de Noc of Lake Michigan. Escanaba has one of the safest natural harbors in the upper Great Lakes, making it a popular destination for boaters. The Ludington Park on the lakefront is one of the largest urban parks in Michigan.

History

Some claim Escanaba mean in the language of the regional Native land of Red Capricorn. Others claim that it means Flat Rock, Flat Rock. In the 19th century Escanaba was an Ojibwa village.
