Background

Escapology is the last of five albums that Robbie Williams and his co-writer and producer Guy Chambers recorded, from which he left after the recording of the dispute, as Chambers refused to work exclusively for Williams. At the same time it was the first of five albums that Williams had to hand over part of its record contract concluded in 2002 over 80 million pounds to the record company EMI. The album was created explicitly on Williams, who in all of Europe at that time was a superstar to make them popular in the United States. This plan failed, however: Escapology in the U.S. reached only number 43 on the charts.

Successes and criticism

Escapology arrived in many European countries in the charts at number one - including Germany, the UK, Austria and Switzerland. So far, the album sold about 7.5 million copies and was the UK 's most successful solo album of the year 2002., It was seven times platinum in the UK, in Germany four times.

Despite the commercial success, many music critics expressed rather disappointed and threw Williams' artistic standstill before. The New Musical Express gave the album four out of ten stars, and The Guardian was bothered by that too obvious, the U.S. market will targeted. The BBC called Escapology however, as Williams' best album so far.
