Geographical Location

The individual districts Eschenburg be due to the Dietzhölze and in its side valleys to the west to the foothills of the Rothaargebirge or natural area - as well as the Dietzhölzetal - to Dilltal counted Struth initiated and east to the Gladenbacher Bergland. Only the district Hirzenhain is located at about 530 m altitude already on the plateau of Bottenhorner plateaus of Gladenbacher mountain country.

The lowest point of the municipality lies at 275 m in the Dietzhölzaue, the highest with 609 m forms the Angelburg.

Eschenburg is located in the north of the Lahn- Dill-Kreis, about 10 km northeast of Dillenburg.

Neighboring communities

Eschenburg is bordered to the north by the municipalities Dietzhölztal (Lahn -Dill -Kreis) and Breidenbach, on the east by the municipalities Steffensberg and Angelburg (all three in Marburg- Biedenkopf ), in the south on the community Siegbach, on the southwest by the city Dillenburg and on the west by the city Haiger (all in the Lahn -Dill -Kreis).

Structure

To Eschenburg include the districts Eibelshausen, which is also the administrative seat, Eiershausen, Roth, Simmersbach, knowledge Bach, Hirzenhain place and Hirzenhain station.

Around 2,000 hectares, representing 43.8 % of the municipality is forested, of which 985 ha community forest, the rest is state forest.

History

The settlement of the community can be detected due to findings in Celtic times. The first written references date back to the 13th century. Early on, was dug in several places for ores such as silver, nickel, copper and iron as well as slate and Diabasstein. This has the consequence that processing plants emerged as metallurgical and iron works. Only recently were uncovered during archaeological excavations, the foundations of a medieval Waldschmiede in the district of knowledge stream that is Geotop as part of the National Goeoparks Westerwald- Lahn- Taunus.

In the district Hirzenhain the teacher Emil Schäfer founded in 1923, a gliding club and put on an airfield. First experiments with homemade flying machines failed. Already in 1928 succeeded the aviation pioneer Max cone a flight of conduct over an hour duration. 1932, the first public flight competition was held. Flight operations had to be discontinued in 1945, but in 1951 he was admitted again with the first German glider meeting. In 1962, the airfield Hirzenhain was moved to its present location.

Incorporations

The foundation of the church took place on October 1, 1971 through the voluntary merger of the former municipalities Eibelshausen, Eiershausen and knowledge Bach.

The 589 -meter-high mountain Eschenburg, seven kilometers north-east of Dillenburg, gave the new community name.

On 1 July 1974, then Hirzenhain and Simmersbach and Roth joined the former county Biedenkopf.

Eibelshausen is the largest town in the municipality. It exerts the midpoint function in middle Dietzhölztal, is the administrative center and school location of elementary and secondary school with gymnasialem branch for ten villages of the municipalities Eschenburg and Dietzhölztal.

Over 750 years old is the village Hirzenhain. There is the second oldest glider club in the world.

In the district of the district Simmersbach the Philip Beech commemorates the return of the Landgrave Philip of Hesse from five years of Spanish- Dutch captivity on September 10, 1552.
