Escuintla is a city in Guatemala. With about 100,000 inhabitants, it is ( included Mixco ) to Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango, the third largest city in the country. It is the administrative center of the department of Escuintla and the greater community of the same name (Municipio ), which comprises 332 km ² and has a population of over 130,000.

Location and climate

The city is located about 45 km southwest of Guatemala City at the foot of the Sierra Madre altitude of 350 meters. From the capital to reach Escuintla on the modern highway CA 9 in about half an hour.

Escuintla is located in the transition zone between the Pacific lowlands region and the central highlands. The climate is mostly hot. The rainy season lasts from May to October.

Economy and Tourism

Escuintla is the capital and commercial center of the wealthiest and most productive departments in Guatemala and one of the main transport hubs in the country. Here the highways intersect CA 2 (Mexico -El Salvador) and CA 9 ( Atlantic and Pacific ). Earlier in Escuintla was also a railway junction of lines that ran along said highways. The railway line from Puerto San Jose to Guatemala City was last only used for freight traffic. Escuintla has an airport for general aviation. Plans to expand this to the international airport of Guatemala City were abandoned for financial reasons in favor of a modernization of the existing airport Guatemala City.

History

Escuintla was before the conquest by Pedro de Alvarado, a center of the Pipil and was Iscuintepéque ( Yxcuyntepeque ), which means "hill of dogs".
