Eskdalemuir
Eskdalemuir ( moor of the Esk Valley ) is a place in the Scottish unitary authority Dumfries and Galloway.
Geography
Eskdalemuir is within a moist peat bog area, which is mainly used for sheep farming and forestry.
The town is near and at one of the many tributaries of the blacks and whites Esk River.
Attractions
Weather Station
Eskdalemuir is known for its weather station, where once Lewis Fry Richardson - the inventor of the numerical weather prediction - has worked. The place holds the British record rainfall. On 26 June 1953, there were measured within 30 minutes of 80 mm of precipitation.
Tibetan Monastery
The Tibetan monastery Samye Ling ( Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre ) was established in 1967 on the site of a former hunting lodge.
Excavations
In Eskdalemuir archaeologists discovered two Neolithic stone circles as well as finds from the Roman and medieval fortifications.
