ESO Hotel

The ESO hotel is a building on Cerro Paranal in Chile, which was completed in 2002. The architects Auer Weber Associates was responsible for the planning. The client was the European Southern Observatory European Southern Observatory ( ESO ). The term "hotel" is a misnomer, as the building is mainly the staff of the Paranal Observatory as a residential option available. From the ESO, the building is designated as Residential.

Description / design

The European Organisation for Astronomical Research operates in the Atacama desert in 2600 m the so-called Very Large Telescope. The Residencia is below the Paranal observatory at an altitude of 2400 m. The building is constructed between the flanks of a depression in the facade shows westward to the Pacific. The building is constructed entirely of colored in the hues of the desert exposed concrete. The central lounge and recreation area is covered by a gently curved steel mesh dome with 35 m diameter. In addition punched in the terrain surface green courtyards serve to regulate the moisture balance.

The complex offers 120 rooms and other public spaces such as a canteen, lounge, swimming pool, fitness center and a library. From Auer Weber Associates in 2002 his determination submitters building was described even years later as one of the " most unusual and exciting construction projects of our office ."

In 2008, the ESO Hotel served as a backdrop for some scenes of the film James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace.
