Essex County (Vermont)

Essex County is a county located in the state of Vermont in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Guildhall.

Geography

The County is bordered on the east by New Hampshire, on the north by Canada and has an area of 1745 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Coos County ( New Hampshire), Grafton County ( New Hampshire), Caledonia County, Orleans County and Coaticook ( Canada).

History

Essex County was formed on November 5, 1792 from parts of Orange County.

Demographic data

1900-1990

According to the census of 2000, there were 6,459 people in the county. There were 2,602 households and 1,805 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.56 % White, 0.17 % African American, 0.63 % Native American, 0.26 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the 0.23 % percent from other ethnic groups; 2.14% were descended from two or more races. 0.50 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,602 households out of which 31.80 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.10 % were married couples living together, 8.30% had a female householder with no husband. 30.60 % were non-families. 24.10 % of all households and 11.50% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.92.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 25.60 % under the age of 18, 6.50 % from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44 years, 25.50% between 45 and 64 years and 15.20% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 100.10 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.00 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,490, and the median income for a family was $ 34,984. Males have a median income of $ 27,929, women $ 20,583. The per capita income was $ 14,388. 13.70% of the population and 9.90% of families are below the poverty line. 17.30 % of those under age 18 and 12.90% were 65 years or older.

In addition to the below independent towns still exist two externally managed community: Iceland Pond and the village Beecher Falls.
