The Estadio Centenario is the largest football stadium in Montevideo, capital of Uruguay. It was a venue for the World Cup 1930.

The Centenario is located on Avenida Américo Ricaldoni and Avenida Federico Vidiella in Barrio Parque Batlle. It is used by the Uruguayan national team, as well as the clubs Nacional and Penarol. The name of the stadium was chosen because of the 100-year celebrations of the independence of Uruguay. It was awarded the World Cup match against Peru Uruguay opened on July 18, 1930 ( 1-0), exactly 100 years after the Constitutional oath, the adoption of the first constitution in the context of the independence of Uruguay (Jura de la Constitución ).

The stadium was designed by the architect Juan Antonio Scasso. Construction began on 21 July 1929. Was completed in a record time of six months. Architecturally, it is assigned to the Modern ( arquitectura moderna ) and is known worldwide as the only stadium that is fit into its natural surroundings. Scasso architect designed it so that the playing field has been created lowered below the ground surface. With the Torre de los Homenajes a part of the construction is visible from afar. The stadium is divided into four areas that Tribunas Olimpica, Colombes, America and Amsterdam. The names of the Tribunas remember the locations of the major successes of the national soccer team of Uruguay.

The original capacity of about 100,000 people had to be reduced for safety reasons at 76,000 now.

The stadium was until now four times over the Copa América (1942, 1956, 1967, 1995), and in each year won the title of America Uruguay master without losing a single game in Centenario. Even Brazil has so far only two of 20 matches in this stadium decide for themselves. Also in the final of the Football World Cup 1930 Uruguay vs Argentina won 4-2 and secured the title of the first football world champion. The German national football team has it. Their two previous appearances a perfect record against Uruguay at the Centenario On 8 June 1977, the German team won 2-0 and on 20 December 1992 4:1. However, Germany lost in the Mundialito 1980/81 here their two games ( 1-2 against Argentina and 1:4 against Brazil).

The Estadio Centenario was declared by FIFA as the only World Soccer Monument ( Monumento Histórico del Fútbol Mundial ). On the ground floor of the Torre de los Homenajes a football museum with exhibits, among others for the Football World Cup 1930 and Football World Cup 1950, Olympic football tournament in 1924 and the Olympic football tournament in 1928, where Uruguay each presented the winner. Since 1995, the Estadio Centenario is classified as Bien of Interest Municipal.
