The Estádio de Pituaçu is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Salvador da Bahia. It can accommodate 32,157 spectators and serves the club EC Bahia as homestead.

History

The Estádio Metropolitano Roberto Santos, commonly known as Estádio de Pituaçu, was in Salvador, capital of the northern Brazilian state of Bahia and also the third largest city in Brazil, built in 1979 and opened on March 11 of the same year. For the first game in the new stadium, the local club Esporte Clube Bahia and Fluminense de Feira met for a friendly match. In the match that ended with a 2-0 for the hosts, Douglas scored the first goal in the new stadium. Since then, EC Bahia carries out most of its home games at Estádio de Pituaçu. For games with large number of audience, the club avoided in the process known as Estádio Fonte Nova Estádio Octávio Mangabeira until it was demolished in 2010 after a partial collapse with several deaths. The EC Bahia was until now once Brazilian football champions, winning the title succeeded in 1988. Moreover, in 1959 succeeded in winning the Taça Brasil, which acted before the introduction of the Series A as Championship, which one can also speak of the EC Bahia champion twice. The Estádio de Pituaçu today can accommodate 32,157 spectators. In the foreseeable future expansion of the stadium to 34,000 spectators is planned. In 2009, the stadium capacity was increased. From previously only nearly 20,000 spectators, the capacity was increased to 32,157 places due to the planned demolition of the Estádio Fonte Nova. The record crowd in the stadium was reached when, on April 2, 1995 EC Vitória in the city of Salvador da Bahia duel 2-0 win against the EC Bahia and 18,418 spectators came to the stadium. In 2009, a qualifying match for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa at the Estádio de Pituaçu took place. In this game, the Brazilian team defeated Chile 4-2.
