The Estadio Defensores del Chaco ( German: Defenders of the Chaco Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Paraguayan capital Asunción. It was opened in 1917 and today has a capacity of 36,000 spectators, of which all seats are seats, the largest stadium in Paraguay. Currently, it is mainly used by the Paraguayan national football team.

History

The stadium was in 1917 as Estadio de Puerto Sajonia (German port Sajonia Stadium ) opened because it Sajonia - is - a suburb of Asunción. Later it was renamed to its present name, Estadio Defensores del Chaco, to honor the part taken in the Chaco War soldiers. 2002 shrank the capacity from 50,000 to 36,000 spectators, after all standing room were converted into seats. Over time, the stadium was the venue for both the Copa Sudamericana and six times the Copa Libertadores. Also included in this Copa América 1979 and 1999, and the U -20 Sudamericano were held in 2007.
