The Estádio Ilha do Retiro ( officially Estádio da Costa Carvalho Adelmar ) is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Recife. It can accommodate 30,520 spectators and serves the club Sport Recife as homestead.
History
The Estádio Ilha do Retiro in Recife, the capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco in the northeast of the country, was built in 1937 and opened on July 4 of that year. The new stadium was given the name Ilha do Retiro, in reference to the district of Recife, in which it was built. Later the name of the stadium was changed and it was called after Adelmar da Costa Carvalho (1909-1990), a former President of Sport Recife, Adelmar Estádio da Costa Carvalho. However, the old name continues to be very popular. Since 1937 the club Sport Recife the Ilha do Retiro used as a venue for home games in football.
