Due to the absence of wetlands, the sediment entry continuously increased, so that the Este can hardly fulfill a function as a habitat for the purposes of the European Water Framework Directive. Lower Este

The Este ( It ) is from the mouth to the water of the lock ( 0.25 km ) on Buxtehude harbor a federal waterway of class I, on the maritime road rules apply. Responsible is the Waterways and Shipping Office Hamburg. Mid-19th century and the first half of the 20th century were due to the strong ship traffic, especially, extensive bank protection measures required.

From about 2 km downstream from Buxtehude to the Hamburg state boundary ( district Cranz ), the river runs on Jorker area. The navigability, however, depends on the tide, above Estebrügge also occur partly strong silting. Because of today small importance of the river for commercial shipping no more dredging will take place on the part of Water and Shipping Authority. The lower reaches of the Este flow to many bettors who are drainage of the marshes.

Freight and Yards

On the Este once ruled brisk freight transport, especially 1910-1939, but at times even after the Second World War. In Buxtehude numerous industrial enterprises were established that shipped their goods from there. In particular, the products of the mills and brickyards were transported by water, as the fruit of Altländer farmers. The town of Buxtehude was proven since 1363 Hanse, operated since the 17th century, the shipowner at the Este deep sea shipping. Many shipowners anchored their boat directly behind their house at the Este. Even today, have in Buxtehude and the Altländer villages along the Este numerous shipping companies headquartered on the Este itself is, however, performed no more freight.

At the Este there used to be many shipyards, of which today but only the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg- Neuenfelde exists. Here mainly small and medium-sized container ships are being built.

Passenger

The first ferry between Cranz and located on the other side of the Elbe Blankenese was first mentioned in 1301, a boat service from Buxtehude to Blankenese was established in 1575, initially with Ewern, 1853 with steamboats. Hallmark of the ships were the crossed keys on the chimney, which is why they got the name " key steamer '. End of the 19th century, shipowners banded together; initially without special designation, and later they gave themselves the name " Blankenese -Este - lines " ( HBEL ). Meanwhile, the number of piers between Buxtehude and Cranz had grown to 17, including five in Estebrügge alone. 1902 declined belonging to the Este lines paddle steamer " Primus " and sparked one of the worst maritime disasters on the Elbe. Due to the fall in passenger numbers after commissioning of the Lower Elbe Railway and the Postbusdienstes 1915 regular trips on the section were Buxtehude - Cranz set, but added a short time after the Second World War. 1963 HBEL was taken over by the HADAG that since then operates the ferry service between Cranz and Blankenese. In the past, remembered today still the symbol of the crossed keys on the service timetable.

In addition to the line operation, the Este was also always traveled by cruise ships. After setting the regular trips to Buxtehude was offered again on the weekend since the 1980s, the possibility of charter tours and public excursions. However, the increasing siltation of the river increasingly difficult to maintain these trips. After dredging of the harbor basin Buxtehude public barge trips are since 2007 on the initiative of the city held back.

Sport boat station

The ride along reed beds, fruit trees, small villages and the shipyard to the Elbe makes Este for boaters to a charming, albeit difficult area. Where once the professional boatmen anchored their boats, are now along the entire course of Buxtehude to Cranz numerous Schlengel for sailing and motor boats.

Bridges and barrages

Since the Middle Ages, the bridge was the only crossing at Estebrügge possibility in the lower reaches of the Este and helped the town named after her at that time stately prosperity. Originally designed as a Dutch drawbridge, today's swing bridge connecting the Jorker districts Estebrügge and Moorende. In 1875 a second bridge between Jork Jork and Hove Kingdom as part of the newly built highway Stade - Francop, today Obstmarschenweg opened. The pedestrian - rolling bridge between Hamburg and Hamburg - Cranz - Neuenfelde 1961 taken together with the on- same spot, inner - Este flood barrier in operation. Is also between Cranz and Neuenfelde since 1967 some 800 meters below, just before the mouth of the river, the outer Este flood barrier, which is spanned by a large bascule bridge. This barrage was built during the Vordeichung after the 1962 storm surge; it can be closed with two Mitre gates. With regard to the above location Sietas Shipyard it has a clearance width of 40 meters, making the maximum width of the built at the shipyard ships is determined.

The Buxtehude ports

Trained as Fleth port is the oldest channel- developed port in northern Germany. The second ( current ) port was initially used only as a roadstead; it lies in front of the former city wall and was therefore unprotected.

After the decline of the transport of goods by ship we neglected the harbor rapidly, it was only used by pleasure boats and a few cruise ships.

The Este will be crossed by the highway construction 26 by means of a flat bridge, north of the city. This Buxtehude's harbor would not apply without restrictions from the lower reaches of the Este can be reached by boats. Alternatively, the construction of a trough is required.

In advance of motorway construction of the port and the Este moved back into view Buxtehude's policy, from 2004, the harbor area has been redesigned, dredged the harbor basin. New houses were built in a wing of the school of painting creates a cultural center. For sports boat tourists driving on the Este to Buxtehude should be made more attractive, also an excursion traffic was on the initiative of the city resumed by barge.

Shortly before the harbor there is a small Bauhafen of the Waterways and Shipping Office Hamburg.
