Esteban Edward Torres

Esteban Edward Torres ( born January 27, 1930 in Miami, Arizona) is an American politician. Between 1983 and 1999 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Esteban Torres attended until 1949, the James A. Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. During the Korean War he served 1949-1953 in the U.S. Army. In the following years he studied until 1966 at various universities. Torres became involved in the labor movement and worked for them in various capacities. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1977 and 1979 he was a U.S. Representative to UNESCO in Paris. From 1979 to 1981 he served on the senior staff of President Jimmy Carter. Between 1968 and 1983, Torres participated in all regional party days of the Democrats in California. He was also a 1984-1996 delegate to all Democratic National Conventions.

1974 ran unsuccessfully for Torres still the U.S. House of Representatives. In the congressional elections of 1982, but he was then in the 34th electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Dan Lungren on January 3, 1983. After seven elections he could pass in Congress until January 3, 1999 eight legislatures. From 1986 to 1987 he was chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

In 1998 he gave up another candidacy. Today, Torres is a member of the transport committee of the State of California. He lives with his wife in West Covina.
