Esteban Lazo Hernández

Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández ( born February 26, 1944 in Jovellanos, Matanzas Province, Cuba) is a Cuban politician of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC ), President of the Parliament, Vice- President of the State Council, member of the Politburo of the Central Committee and the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the PCC.

Biography

Lazo Hernández was due to its poor peasant origin his education after elementary school not to continue, but had to help his parents early in the management of fields and generate family income. After the successful revolution from 1 January 1959, he was initially continued to work as farm laborers, but also included alongside Ernesto Che Guevara in 1960 the founders of the Association of Young Rebels ( Asociación de Jóvenes Rebeldes ), from 1962, the present-day youth organization Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas emerged. In the following years he took part in several functions at the so-called National Campaign for Literacy ( Campaña Nacional de Alfabetización de Cuba ).

In 1963 he became a member of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC ), and then took within the PCC performs various functions. First, he was in 1964 secretary of the city committee of the PCC in his hometown of Jovellanos for education and organization, before he first secretary of the PCC of San Pedro de Mayabón 1968. Due to its local leadership, he was already one year later, 1969 First Secretary of the PCC of Colón in his home province of Matanzas. In 1971 he was appointed member of the provincial offices of the PCC of Matanzas and 1979 at the same time as delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture for the Province of Matanzas.

In 1980, he was Second Secretary at first and then the following year 1981 First Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the PCC of Matanzas. In 1980 he was also a member of the Central Committee of the PCC, and in 1981 a deputy of the National Assembly ( Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular). Some years later, was initially his election as first secretary of the PCC of Santiago de Cuba, the second largest Cuban province. At the 3rd Congress of the PCC in February 1986, he was also first elected member of the Politburo of the Central Committee, to which he has belonged since. On February 24, 1992 at the same time followed by his election as Vice President of the State Council ( Consejo del Estado de Cuba ). In addition, he was First Secretary of the PCC in 1994 in Havana.

As Lazo Hernández member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the PCC was in October 1997, the former first secretary of the PCC Sancti Spiritus Province Pedro Sáez Montejo was his successor as First Secretary of the PCC Havana Province.

With the onset of illness of Fidel Castro, he was appointed on 31 July 2006 as a member of a seven-member committee, chaired by Raúl Castro, which was entrusted with the leadership of Cuba. On 24 February 2008, he was confirmed by the National Assembly in his office as Vice- President of the State Council.

On February 24, 2013 Lazo was elected as the successor to Ricardo Alarcón President of the Cuban National Parliament.

Awards

For his contribution to the Cuban Revolution and the state he has won several awards and received, among other things:

  • Medal for Literacy ( Medalla de la Alfabetización )
  • Commemorative Medal for the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Revolutionary Armed Forces ( Medalla Conmemorativa "XX Aniversario de las FAR " ),
  • Certificate for 35 -year-old squad activity in the PCC ( Diploma por 35 años como Cuadro del PCC)
  • Award for 20 years of State security ( distinción XX Años de la Seguridad del Estado ).
