Esteban Salas y Castro

Esteban Salas y Castro ( born December 25, 1725 in Havana, † July 14, 1803 in Santiago de Cuba ) was a Cuban composer and church musician.

Salas studied in Havana in addition to music and philosophy, theology and canon law. Since 1764 he was Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba, 1790, he was also ordained a priest here.

The late baroque masterpiece is considered the first "classical" composer of Cuba. He wrote eight masses, two motets, three passions, several Responsorien, Psalms, propers, litanies, hymns and sequences, as well as more than sixty villancicos and a number of car sacramental and Tonadillas.
