Estelle Getty

Estelle Getty ( born July 25, 1923 as Estelle shear in Manhattan, New York City; † 22 July 2008 Los Angeles ) was an American actress. She became famous as an actress Sophia Petrillo in the series Golden Girls.

Biography

Estelle shear was the daughter of Polish-Jewish immigrants Sarah and Charles shear. Her father opened a glassware shop, which was eventually taken over by Arthur Gettleman. In 1947 she married Gettleman, whose surname she derived her stage name.

After a drama training Getty came quickly to an engagement in New York and soon came to the film. She became internationally known for her role as Sophia Petrillo on the television series The Golden Girls, which was filmed from 1985 to 1992 in the U.S. and then broadcast worldwide. Here, she played the always sarcastic, humorous and experienced Senior live a Four - women -WG for which it was established in 1986 with a Golden Globe Award and in 1988 won an Emmy Award. Also in the succession series Golden Palace, which was filmed and broadcast from 1992 to 1993, she appeared in the role of Sophia.

After the end of The Golden Girls and Golden Palace Estelle Getty played the role of Sophia to 1995 as recurring supporting role in the series Harry's Nest ( Empty Nest ), the spin off in 1988 as the Golden Girls was started. Furthermore, Sophia appeared in some episodes of the series Hello sister! On ( Nurses ), which in turn was designed in 1991 as a successor series of Empty Nest. Estelle Getty was thus the only actress of the Golden Girls, which occurred in all three series and their character was seen in the longest first broadcast on television.

Getty also starred in several films with, among others, in Stuart Little and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot! ( with Sylvester Stallone ). After Getty was supposedly suffering from Parkinson 's disease, she retired in 2000 from the public gaze. Later it was revealed that she was suffering from Lewy body dementia. After the death of her husband 2004 Getty lived in retirement in Los Angeles, where he died in 2008 a few days before her 85th birthday. She leaves behind two sons.
