Estes Park is a town in Larimer County in the U.S. state of Colorado in the Big Thompson River, which is dammed here to Lake Estes. The population was 5,858 inhabitants according to the census in 2010.

The city was named after Joel Estes, who founded Estes Park in 1859. It lies in a valley 2293 meters above sea level. In summer it is a popular destination with many tourist shops and main access for the Rocky Mountain National Park.

In the old town several houses have been obtained from the Wild West era and lovingly restored.

In the suburbs, the Stanley Hotel is from the year 1906. Stephen King, who stayed here was inspired by the Appendix to his novel The Shining.

Every year, the Gospel Music Association her junior Festival Music in the Rockies performs here.

The city suffered severe damage in July 1982 by flooding caused by failure of Lawn Lake Dam.

Demography

Data obtained from the census in 2000 5.413 residents of Estes Park lived in 2,541 households; among them were 1,565 families. The population density was 359 per km ². In place 3,323 residential units were recorded. Among the population was 95.1 % White, 0.3% African American, 0.5% American Indian, 0.8 % Asian and 2.1% of other ethnic groups; 1.2 % reported belonging to several ethnic groups.

Among the 2,541 households 20.5% had children under the age of 18; 31.0 % were single-person households. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size 2.61 persons.

The population was spread out with 17.6 % under the age of 18, 5.8 % from 18 to 24, 26.6 % 25-44 years, 29.4 % from 45 to 64 years and 20.7 % of 65 years or older. The median age was 45 years.

The median household income was $ 43,262, the median family income $ 55,667. The per capita income in Estes Park was $ 30,499. Under the poverty line lived 4.5 % of the population.
