Estill County, Kentucky

Estill County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Irvine, which was named after Colonel William Irvine, an early settler. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in east-central Kentucky and has an area of 662 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Clark County, Powell County, Lee County, Jackson County and Madison County.

History

Estill County was formed on January 27, 1808 from parts of Clark County and Madison County. It was named after Captain James Estill, who was killed in 1782 at the Battle of Little Mountain.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Estill County 15,307 people; were counted 6,108 households and 4,434 families. The population density was 23 people per square kilometer.
