Estrada de Ferro Santos-Jundiaí

The railway Santos - Jundiaí connects the Brazilian port city of Santos with the cities of São Paulo and Jundiaí. World famous she was by the rail cable car from Paranapiacaba.

Technical Parameters

Like most Brazilian tracks the single-track 140 km long stretch was built in a track width of 1,600 millimeters. Is electrified in the region of the gear operation with direct current (3 kV) and an overhead line. In the area of Adhäsionsstrecke a top speed of 45 km / h, driven, in the rack during the ascent 30 km / h, on the downhill 22 km / h

History

The route went into operation in 1866. In the first place it was used to connect the region around São Paulo, in the 19th century, the world's leading coffee growing area with a harbor on the Atlantic coast. Topographically the reason was problematic because São Paulo, which is only 60 km from the sea, is situated on a 800 meter high plateau. A height difference of 773 must be overcome in just about 9 km. These served a funicular railway, a system on which the trains were moved to a rope by stationary steam engines on ramps. The first rail cable car in 1895 was replaced by a more powerful second, which in turn 1974-1982 - during this time passed the cable car and cog railway parallel - has been through a gear train to the Abt system replaced with a dreilamelligen rack, had been built on the 1968.

Originally, the distance from the Ferroviária Federal SA was operated, which went bankrupt in 1996. The plant was built by the MRS Logistica S. A. taken that gave up the passenger.

Rolling stock

For use were built by Hitachi locomotives. They had 86.5 t weight and 2780 kW traction performance. They were in the years 1972 (No. 2001-2008 ), 1979 (No. 2009-2012 ) and 1990 (No. 9042-9043 ) delivered. They were in their time the most powerful gear locomotives in the world. There are also three corresponding diesel locomotives, which are used in track maintenance.

The Swiss company Stadler Rail delivered in 2012 and 2013 seven new locomotives for the gear range, referred to by the manufacturer as a series Hey 4/4. They are the strongest Zahnradloks the world. An option exists another three vehicles. These locomotives are capable of more than 5000 kW traction power 750 ton trains on the rack railway to transport. The gear operation about 25 % of the power will be provided via a separately driven adhesion transmission. All seven locomotives are in operation since 1 May 2013.

Operation

The trains will be out in packets, that is, several - usually four - trains with double traction drive all after another in the same direction. A train has four cars in the rule and required for the steep section of about 20 minutes. The maximum towing capacity is 500 tons. The transport volume of the track is about 14 million gross tons per year (equivalent to about half the volume through the Gotthard tunnel ). The transported primarily arises downhill to 80 %, is to iron ore and agricultural products.

Museum

In the former railroad depot in Paranapiacaba now houses a railway museum.
