Eszopiclone is a drug from the group of sleeping pills and related benzodiazepines in effect.

Chemically the substance belongs to the class of cyclopyrrolones. Of the two enantiomers [(R ) - and ( S)- zopiclone ] only affects the (S ) enantiomer eszopiclone sleep-. By the use of eszopiclone the dose can be substantially reduced over the use of the racemic mixture. Eszopiclone is approved since 2005 in the USA as a sleep aid and available there under the brand name Lunesta. A marketing authorization application in the EU had withdrawn the manufacturer of the Committee for Human Medicinal Products of the European Medicines Agency, the drug indeed wanted to allow for the included eszopiclone but the status of a " new active substance" refused. This would have the manufacturers, the company Sepracor Pharmaceuticals, can not benefit from the ten years of market exclusivity following drug is granted with new drugs.
