Ételfay

Ételfay ( Picard: Tèrfayin ) is a northern French village with 393 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region. The municipality is located in the arrondissement of Montdidier, is part of the Communauté de communes du canton de Montdidier, in the canton Montdidier.

Geography

The municipality is located in countryside 3.5 km east-northeast of Santerre Montdidier and this adjacent to the road department D135A.

History

Finds of flint cut to size suggest a prehistoric settlement. In the municipality remains of a Gallo- Roman villa and a brick were found. In the Middle Ages basement ( Muches ) were dug into the subsoil of chalk. The church was built in the 12th century. 1832 collapsed her choir vault. The estate was in the hands of the de Vendeuil family, whose coat of arms is that of the community since 1490. In 1653 the town was sacked and burned by Spanish troops. The area occupied by German troops Ételfay was freed in June 1918. The municipality received the Croix de guerre as a distinction from 1914 to 1918.
