The Eteokretische ( "real Cretan ") was a pre-Greek language of Crete, which was one of the postulated Aegean languages. It was spoken by the people of the Eteocretans. During the Minoan, its predecessor, was spoken as the language of the Minoan civilization in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC in Crete and the surrounding area, only small enclaves remained in the 1st millennium BC, in the extreme east and west Crete left while had long taken the Greek in the other parts of Crete.

The Eteokretische is known from about half a dozen short inscriptions in Greek characters and eteokretischer language from the 7th to 3rd century BC, especially from Dreros ( Driros ) and Praisos come. You are not understandable, although there are two fragmentary bilinguals. Since the lyrics are very fragmentary, a deciphering is not yet possible. It is unclear, to date, the classification of the Eteokretisch - Minoan in a particular language family, it was associated with, the Etruscan, Semitic and Hittite in conjunction.
