Ethelbert Barksdale

Ethelbert Barksdale ( born January 4, 1824 in Smyrna, Rutherford County, Tennessee, † February 17, 1893 in Yazoo City, Mississippi ) was an American politician (Democratic Party), who represented the state of Mississippi in the U.S. House of Representatives and in the Konföderiertenkongress.

As a young man Ethelbert Barksdale moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where he worked as a journalist. From 1854 to 1861 he was editor of the official journal of the state; he took the same task again from 1876 to 1883.

His first political mandate from Barksdale practiced in the Confederate States. From 1862 to 1865 he was a member of the House of Representatives in the first and second Konföderiertenkongress. After the end of the Civil War he was in 1868, 1872 and 1880 a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, where he had participated in 1860. From 1877 to 1879 he was faced with the Democrats in Mississippi.

1882 Ethelbert Barksdale was finally elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He represented his state on 4 March 1883 to March 3, 1887 in Washington, then missed the re-election. After that he worked agriculturally in Yazoo City, where he died in 1893.

His brother William Barksdale was from 1853 to 1861 also a deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives and then joined the Confederate Army. He died at the Battle of Gettysburg.
