Etienne Vermeersch

Etienne Vermeersch ( born 2 May 1934 in Brugge Sint- Michiels ) is a Belgian philosopher. He achieved fame for his contributions on the subject of atheism.

Life

Vermeersch earned an MA in Classical Philology and Philosophy, and in 1965 a PhD at the University of Ghent. As a professor, he taught there scientific theory and philosophical anthropology. Vermeersch first belonged to the Jesuits. With time, however, he saw the contradictions of Christianity, and he became an atheist. As a skeptic, he is one of the founders of SKEPP. He is considered one of the most influential intellectuals of Flanders.
