Etty Hillesum

Etty Hillesum ( born January 15, 1914 Esther Hillesum in Middelburg, † November 30, 1943 in the concentration camp Auschwitz -Birkenau ) was a Dutch- Jewish teacher. Your posthumously published diaries from the years 1941-1943 they made known internationally.

Life

Since 1924 Esther " Etty " Hillesum lived in Deventer, where he attended the urban school. Her father, Louis, who first worked in Middelburg as a teacher of Latin, Greek and other subjects, was then rector of this school. Etty's mother Rebecca née Bernstein came from Russia. Etty grew up in a secular or Christian atmosphere without Jewish education. From 1932 she studied in Amsterdam Slavic Studies; later Jura. Etty had two brothers: Mischa, who was a talented pianist, and Jaap (Jacob), the doctor was.
