Etzelkofen was until December 31, 2013 municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. On 1 January 2014, merged with the former municipalities Etzelkofen Buren to the court, Count Ried, Limpach, Mülchi, Schalunen and Zauggenried for Township woman fountain.

Geography

Etzelkofen located in the northeastern part of the Rapperswil - plateau on the Swiss Plateau, nestled in a slightly elevated valley of Limpachtales, between the two villages in the north fairs in the canton of Solothurn and in the South, Mrs. Fountain in the canton of Bern. Etzelkofen is located on 529 m above sea level. Level, 15 km north of the capital of the canton of Bern ( straight line ) and almost at the same distance of the city Solothurn. Etzelkofen is completely surrounded by forest and farmland.

Population

With 296 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Etzelkofen was one of the small communities of the Canton of Bern. Of the residents 99.1 % are German, 0.6 % English speaking and 0.3 % speak French (as of 2000). The population of Etzelkofen amounted in 1850 to 353 residents in 1900 to 275 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population fluctuated always in the range 240-280 people. Since 1980 (243 inhabitants) a significant population increase was recorded.

Economy

Etzelkofen was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. The water power of the Mülchibachs was formerly used for the operation of a mill. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1295 under the name Etzelkoven. Later, the names Ezenchoven (1302 ) published, Ezzelkoven ( 1325 ) and Ezzenkoven ( 1327 ). The name goes back to the Old High German personal name Azzilo or Ezzilo. With a name ending in - kofen, which is typical of which was founded in the 7th and 8th century Alemannic settlements, he means so much as in the courts of the people of Azzilo / Ezzilo, where so-called relocated farms are meant.

Since the Middle Ages belonged to the rule Etzelkofen fairs that passed through a donation in 1278 to the St. Urs pin in Solothurn. The sovereignty and jurisdiction over the high Etzelkofen was responsible until 1406 the Kyburgs, then Bern and the district court Zollikofen. Only after completion of the contract Wyniger ( 1665) came Etzelkofen to Bern and the bailiwick woman fountain was assigned. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ), the village belonged to the district during the Helvetic Zollikofen and from 1803 to Oberamt Mrs. Fountain, received the status of an office district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.

Since 1 January 2014 Etzelkofen is no longer independent municipality. However, the individual villages retain their names. The character and identity of the villages should be preserved in the future.

Attractions

The village has preserved several characteristic farmhouses of the Bernese country style from the 18th and 19th centuries. Etzelkofen does not have its own church and cemetery, it belongs to the canton of Solothurn parish fairs
