EU-Eco-regulation

(European Eco-Regulation or EC Organic Regulation ) defines " Regulation 2007 of 28 June 2007 on the ecological / organic production and labeling of organic / biological products ( EEC ) No 834 / " as products and foods that are labeled as organic products, must be created and made ​​. It is the successor of Regulation ( EEC) No 2092/91, which was repealed it.

Regulation builds on the basic guidelines of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM, in which about 750 organizations from more than 108 nations are organized.

Identification

Only products that meet or exceed the EU-Eco - Regulation,

  • May use the terms bio, eco, organic, eco friendly, environmentally controlled, certified organic, organic farming, organic farming, biodynamic and use bio- organic.
  • , the labeling Organic Farming -EEC control system, an indication of the number (for example: DE- 034- Öko -Control ) and the name of the tested organic control use ( specify at least one of them is mandatory).
  • Allowed an organic label and / or the name and logo of the organic farming association whose member they are wearing.

By July 2006, were allowed some foods whose trademarks were registered with the word element ' bio' before the entry into force of the Regulation on Organic Farming, use the appropriate part of their name, even if they are not produced biologically. For example, " Bioghurt ", " Biofit " and " Bioreform ".

Meanwhile, according to a judgment of the Federal Court of Justice of 13 September 2012, the term " Organic mineral water" admissible ( Case No. I ZR 230/11 ); the product is available in select stores under the name Bio - crystal.

Content

For foods that are composed of several ingredients, the following labeling scheme applies:

  • If the product is at least 95 % of organic production, the name Biologically or Environmentally can be performed.
  • If less than 95 % but at least 70 % of ingredients produced organically, they may be identified in the ingredient list as such - usually with an asterisk and a footnote.

The Regulation also regulates the import of organic products from third countries.

1999, the EU-Eco - Regulation to Regulation ( EC) No 1804/1999 has been added, which controls the breeding, identification and control of major animal species. Genetically modified organisms and derived products must not be used in organic farming and in the processing of organic foods. These VO is obsolete by the implementing Regulation referred to below.

Details of cultivation, the production of animal food and marketing govern the Implementing Regulation ( EC) No 889/ 2008 of 5 September 2008 and the Implementing Regulation ( EC) No 1235/ 2008 of 8 December 2008 ( arrangements for imports from third countries ).

Since July 2010 all packaged products under Regulation are binding marked with a new seal, which has been selected as a result of a competition. Products by this standard, often with organic ( certified organic ) abbreviated.

American counterpart

As an analogy to the EU organic logo, the U.S. certification of organic food NOP can be seen. NOP stands for National Organic Program and is awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
