Eubulus (statesman)

Eubulus (c. 405 BC; † 335 BC ) was an Athenian politician, v. in the period between 355 BC and 342 BC was one of the most important statesmen of Athens and primarily took care of the finances of the city.

About the early life of Eubulus is virtually nothing is known except that he came from the demos Anaphlystos. He was supported by Diophantus of Smettos and was soon entrusted with the supervision of the city finances. He is mainly attributed to that of Athens in the middle of the 4th century BC managed to financially recover and develop a long no longer unheard of prosperity. So he pushed through a law that smaller military operations should no longer be financed from the public budget checkout.

On the issue of dealing with the emerging Macedonian kingdom Eubulus belonged to the " peace party " and was thus (from about 352 ) as opposed to Demosthenes, who studied the military conflict with Philip II. Eubulus, however, sought, as well as other statesmen like Meidias, Aeschines and Phocion, a general peace, the BC came with considerable contribution of Philocrates in the year 346 also concluded (see peace of Philocrates ).

Philip intervened a few years later, however, again in central Greece. Eubulus again pleaded for a peaceful solution, but sat down now the war party under Demosthenes by. After the disastrous defeat of Athens against Macedonia at the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC Eubulus no longer appears in the sources.
