Eudiometer

The Eudiometer (Greek: air quality knife ) is a one-sided sealed and provided with a scale glass tube. It is used to quantify gas volumes which occur during a chemical reaction.

Principle of operation

The Eudiometer this is completely filled with fluid and immersed with the open end in a bath of the same liquid. In the simplest case, this is water. A chemical reaction which takes place below the Eudiometers arise in which gases, this releases them into the overlying Eudiometer, which is displaced from this liquid. The volume of displaced fluid equal to the volume of the resulting gas. This results in statements about the chemical reaction and the gas density can be obtained.

A technical application is the eudiometer in the determination of the oxygen content of, for example Fermentation gases.

School experiment

For school purposes, the Eudiometer is filled with hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. This mixture is ignited by an electric spark. On the basis of this experiment the law of constant volume ratio is taught.
