Eugen Gomringer

Eugen Gomringer ( born January 20, 1925 in Cachuela Esperanza, Bolivia, the son of a Swiss father and a Bolivian ) is considered the father of concrete poetry.

Life

Gomringer studied from 1944 to 1952 Economics and History of Art in Berne and Rome. From 1954 to 1957 he worked as a secretary by Max Bill at the Ulm School of Design. In 1953 he founded, together with Dieter Roth and Marcel Wyss magazine spiral and was from 1960 to 1965, the book series concrete poetry - poesia concreta out. From 1961 to 1967 he was head of the Swiss Werkbund. From 1967 to 1985 he headed the Cultural Advisory Council of Rosenthal AG in Selb. From 1977 to 1990 he taught also as professor of theory of aesthetics at the Art Academy Dusseldorf. He was from 1966 to 1968 member of the documenta - Council documenta 4 in Kassel in 1968. In 1986 he was a visiting professor of poetics in Bamberg and in 1988 director of the International Forum of Design in Ulm.

Since 1971 he is a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 2000 he founded the Institute for Constructive Art and Concrete Poetry ( ICCS ) to his longtime residence, Upper Franconia Rehau. His collection formed the basis of the Museum of Concrete Art, Ingolstadt.

1997 Gomringer was awarded the Culture Prize of the City Rehau. On 21 October 2007 he also received the only and unique conferred Premio Punta Tragara per la Poesia Concreta. The award ceremony took place on the top of Santis Mountain. In 2008 he was awarded for his contribution to the Bavarian Order of Merit. In June 2010, he and his daughter Nora were invited for a poetry chair at the University of Koblenz -Landau. On 22 January 2011, the Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin has the Alice Salomon Prize 2011 awarded to Eugene poetics Gomringer. His poem avenidas adorns the facade of the University

Concrete Poetry

1953 Gomringer coined the term concrete poetry in analogy to the concept of "Concrete Art ". In his poems that play with the materiality of writing and form of, it follows the abstract - constructive mentioned by him - painting of his time.
