Eugen Kvaternik

Eugen Kvaternik ( born October 31, 1825 Zagreb, Empire Austria, † October 11, 1871 at Rakovica, Austria - Hungary ) was a Croatian nationalist politicians. Kvaternik and Ante Starčević founded the Croatian Party of Rights. As a nationalist leaning Kvaternik any compromise with the Kingdom of Hungary, which Croatia was subordinate to 1918, from.

Life

Eugen Kvaternik studied in Pest Jura. After the 1848 revolution he hoped for Croatia's independence from Hungary. How many Croatian nationalists he advocated a separate Croatian government. The Emperor of the Habsburg dynasty should be only nominally head of state of the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia. After the defeat of the revolution and the abolition of the independent Croatian administration Kvaternik was disappointed. His views became increasingly radical and anti- Habsburg. In 1858 he emigrated to Russia. There he tried unsuccessfully to win the tsarist government for intervention in favor of the Croats. A similarly adventurous attempt, he did little later in France, his second exile country.

In 1860 he returned to Croatia. He ran for a seat in parliament and in 1861 elected to the Sabor. In 1862 he was arrested for anti-government activities. With a brief interruption in 1865, lasted until 1867 Kvaternik again in exile. After the Austro- Hungarian Compromise him to return to the homeland was permitted.

Dissatisfied with the political development led Kvaternik in Lika a revolt against the government, in which involved about 200 armed men. In the suppression of the uprising Kvaternik was killed.

Appreciation

Especially during the Independent State of Croatia during World War II and in the first years after independence in 1991 Kvaternik was honored as a national hero in Croatia. In the 1990s, his writings have been reprinted. Today, the uncompromising nationalist is considered differentiated.
