Eugene von Guerard

Eugene von Guerard ( baptized as Johann Joseph Eugene von Guerard, born November 19, 1811 in Vienna, † April 17, 1901 in London) was an Austrian- Australian- British painter, the most important period of his artistic career in the years 1852-1882 spent in Australia.

Artistic Career

With his father Bernhard von Guerard, a court painter to Francis I of Austria, he traveled through Italy and came to Rome with the Nazarenes in contact. From 1838 to 1851/52 he lived in Dusseldorf, where until 1847 he deepened the landscape painting at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. 1848 bis 1851/52 Guerard was a member of the Artists' Union paintbox.

In today's Australian state of Victoria, then a British colony, he tried temporarily and unsuccessfully as a gold digger. As a painter, he held the life of the gold rush fixed number of details and diary notes. After the gold-digging, he married on 15 July 1854 in St Francis ' Church Melbourne Louise Arnz from Dusseldorf. His painterly works that he created during the extended Bereisungen in Australia and New Zealand, partly in connection with scientific expeditions, soon gained him the reputation of the leading landscape painter in these colonies. His paintings have been exhibited in the National Gallery of Victoria. Great successes were his pictures View of Geelong (1856 ), North -east View from the Northern Top of Mount Kosciusko (1863 ) and Valley of the Mitta Mitta (1866 ). At the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, he was set in 1870 as the first " Master of the School of Painting". He subsequently held eleven years until the end of 1881 the lectureship. Health reasons have led the task of his teaching. Frederick McCubbin and Tom Roberts were among his pupils.

1882 moved Guerard back to Europe. After his wife's death (1891 ) he lost his savings in 1893 by the collapse of Australian banks. He died penniless in London. It survived by his only daughter, Victoria, who was born on September 4, 1857 in Melbourne and married on December 20, 1885 in Dusseldorf Reginald Blunt.

Guerard paintings are now occasionally traded at auctions. A portrait Guerard, covering shows him in 1838 with a Fez is obtained in the Friendship Gallery of 57 individual portraits of the Düsseldorf school and their friends ( 1835-1845 ).

Official honors

In 1870, Guerard was awarded by Franz Joseph I Franz Joseph Order.
