Eugenijus Gentvilas

Eugenijus Gentvilas ( born March 14, 1960 in Telšiai ) is a Lithuanian politician, former Prime Minister and Member of Parliament.

Life

His sister is Virginija Baltraitienė (* 1958), Lithuanian politician, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, and former Mayor of Rajongemeinde Kėdainiai ( 2005).

Study and career

After schooling studied Gentvilas 1978-1983 Geography at the University of Vilnius. He was then at the Academy of Sciences until 1990 Researcher. In 1993 he received his doctorate. Between 1993 and 1996 he was a lecturer at the University of Klaipeda.

Political career

Gentvilas began his political career immediately after the independence of Lithuania on 11 March 1990 with the election of the deputies of the Supreme Council, the provisional parliament of Lithuania ( Seimas ) in which he ( liberalų Lietuvos sąjunga ) to 1992, the Liberal Union represented and their Group Chairman he was from 1991 to 1992 at the same time.

In 1995 he became a member of the City Council of Klaipėda, where he remained until 2004. During this time he was also from 1996 to 1999 Chairman of the Liberal Union. 1997 Ghent Vilas was elected mayor of Klaipeda. As such he received in August 1998 for their 50-year anniversary of the German Working Group of the Memel counties. The office of mayor he held until 2001.

On 15 June 2001, he was Minister of Economic Affairs in the cabinet of Rolandas Paksas. When he resigned five days later, Gent Vilas became acting prime minister. On July 3, 2001, he then followed the Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas former President. He was then re- Chairman of the Liberal Union. After the merger with the Liberal Center Union ( Lietuvos centro sąjunga ) and the Modern Christian ( Moderniųjų krikščionių demokratų sąjunga ) for the Liberals and Centre Union ( Liberalų ir centro sąjunga ) in May 2003, he became its vice chairman. However, a position he gave up in 2004 to successfully run as MP for the European Parliament. Since 2006 he is a member of the Liberal Party formed by elimination of motion ( Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų Sąjūdis ).

On 10 June 2004 he was elected after Lithuania's accession to the European Union for the Members of the European Parliament. As such, it belongs to the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, whose board member, he is at the same time. For his activities in the Committee on Regional Development, he was awarded the prize of the members of the European Parliament (MEP Award 2007 ) 2007.
