Eugenio Garin

Eugenio Garin [ garɛ ] ( born May 9, 1909 in Rieti, † December 29, 2004 in Florence ) was an Italian philologist, historian and philosopher.

Life

Garin studied philosophy at Giovanni Gentile in Florence. He then worked as a teacher at a high school. In 1946 he became a full professor in Florence berufen.1970 he was awarded an Antonio Feltrinelli Prize. Until 1974, he taught and conducted research in Florence with the scientific priorities culture philosophy and history of philosophy. In 1974 he accepted an appointment as a professor at the chair of history of thought of the Renaissance at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa.

In his writings Garin sat inter alia, with the image of man in the Renaissance and the Italian humanism apart. The highly productive scholar published his life more than 1400 books and articles.

Garin died on 29 December 2004 at the age of 95 years at his home in Florence. In her obituary praised him as Italian media giants of modern philosophy.
