Eugenio Torre

Eugenio Torre (* November 4, 1951 in Iloilo City ) is a Filipino chess player.

In 1969 Eugenio Torre participated in the Junior World Championships U20 in Stockholm, which was won by Anatoly Karpov. 1974 Torre as the first Asian player outside the Soviet Union was Grand Master and has since been in his home country, a very popular sportsman. Since 1970 he has played on every Chess Olympiad, with its 19th participation in Turin in 2006 he set a record. On the Chess Olympiad 1980 in Malta, he won a bronze medal on first board.

In 1982 he qualified for the Candidates matches for the World Chess Championship in 2580 and reached its best Elo rating, but failed in 1983 in the quarter- finals of Zoltán Ribli. Torre was a friend of Bobby Fischer 's second in the competition and with Boris Spassky in 1992 His current Elo rating is 2519 (as of April 2008)., The highest ever Elo rating of 2580, he reached in January 1983.
