Eugenius of Palermo

Eugenius of Palermo, also Eugenius Siculus (Latin ), Εὐγενἠς Εὐγένιος ὁ τῆς Πανόρμου ( Greek), Eugenius Amiratus or Eugenio da Palermo (* around 1130 in Palermo, † after 1203) was Ammiratus (Administrative officer, Admiral ) of the medieval Kingdom of Sicily, writer and translator from Arabic and Greek.

Life

The Palermo -born came from a family of Greek origin. His grandfather Eugenius, his uncle and his father John had been officials of the Norman kings of Sicily from the house of Hauteville. Eugene began his career under King Wilhelm II. Since 1174, he served first as this Master of Duana baronum, the Royal Chamber of Finance for the continental territories, based in Salerno. Under his successor Tancred of Lecce, he was promoted to the Emir. He also held after the death of Tancred in February 1194 The Office. After collection and coronation of Henry VI. in Palermo, he was suspected of end 1194, to have been involved in a conspiracy of Sybille, the widow of Tancred, against the imperial couple. He was captured with the other alleged conspirators and spent over the Alps to Germany, where he was for some time, probably on Trifels imprisoned. Work

Eugenius was also a writer and translator. He wrote poems in Greek, have survived 24 of them and convey, with great metrical and rhetorical skill, and some insights into his life, especially c. I, which is taken during the captivity. His translation of the sayings of the Sibyl Erythrai from Greek into Latin, is preserved only in a pseudojoachitischen revision.
