The basal spot - Bodeneule ( Eugnorisma depunctum, often with a false ending depuncta [Note 1] ) referred to as Dark brown Erdeule, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ).

Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth from 34 to 44 millimeters. The forewing color varies from light brown to yellow -gray to dark brown, but can also be tinted brown. In Basalfeld a prominent black spot is visible. On Costalrand there are more black spots. Ring and kidney blemish are bright rimmed and partially surrounded by darker areas. Some veins stand out with bright coloring. The outer transverse line and the wavy line are darkened and slightly wavy. In between, small, black dots stand out. There are dark brown spots on the inside of the arrow hemline. The Saumfeld has a slightly darkened tint. The hind wings at Eugnorisma depunctum (Linnaeus, 1761 ) are gray-brown.

Caterpillar, and chrysalis

The caterpillar is yellowish gray in color and has an indistinct bright topline. It has many small dark speckles and spots. The wide, bright side strip is bounded sharply upward, spiracles are white with a black border. The red-brown doll has two spines on the cremaster.

Similar Species

When in Spain, Portugal and Morocco -occurring, slightly smaller Eugnorisma arenoflavidum ( Saddle Werda, 1934), the hind wings are whitish. In Turkey, Iran, Armenia and Turkestan the similar style Eugnorisma ponticum (Staudinger, 1891 ) occurs, which is somewhat smaller with a wingspan 31-38 mm and also with of Eugnorisma depunctatum and Eugnorisma arenoflavidum by the pale gray hind wings a broad darker outer band and different kind of genitals is different.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The basal spot - Bodeneule is widely used in Europe, west to England, north to Scotland and Fennoscandia, south to southern France, southern Italy, Sicily and Greece, also in the east to the Caucasus and Turkestan. In northern France, the Benelux countries and some western regions of Germany, however, it is also missing on most Mediterranean islands. It occurs both in dry areas, such as pagans or warm slopes, as well as in mixed forests, moist stream valleys and parks. In the mountains it is still to be found at altitudes of 1500 meters.

Way of life

The basal spot - Bodeneule is one generation per year, flying moths whose July-September. The moths are nocturnal, and come to the bait as well as artificial light sources. The females lay eggs in small clutches. The larvae feed after hatching the egg shells and live in small groups. They overwinter without feeding. In the spring they feed on various plants, such as Soft lung herb ( Pulmonaria mollis ), deadnettles ( Lamium ), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) or stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). The caterpillars feed mostly at night. They pupate in May mainly in a hole in the ground.

Endangering

The species is not detected in all provinces, but is not classified as acute danger in Germany on the Red List of Threatened Species.
