EUnet

The EUnet was founded in 1982 and grew out of the European Unix Systems User Group ( EUUG ).

EUnet in Germany

The German part of EUnet was one of the first German Internet provider projects, conducted at the University of Dortmund. Some years after the spin-off as a limited company EUnet went up in Verizon UUNET and MCI Worldcom. In 1999, the parent company of EUnet International, Qwest, in return, the Karlsruhe Xlink finally to 100 %.

At the beginning of 1993, the project as EUnet Germany GmbH was established with participation of the German Unix User Group ( GUUG ) in the Technology Center Dortmund. 1999 EUnet Germany GmbH was acquired by UUNET Technologies and renamed GmbH in the same year for UUNET Germany. In 2001 the acquisition of UUNET by former WorldCom Group (later MCI Worldcom ), UUNET where the base was formed to build the IP division. The emerged from the German branch EUnet project is now part of the German branch of the telecommunications company Verizon, based in Dortmund.

EUnet in Austria

EUnet Austria was on 13 February 1992 by the Unix User Group Austria ( UUGA ) and some investors established as EUnet IT services GmbH. EUnet Austria was the first commercial Internet service provider in Austria. In April 1992, the first customer was connected. In the following years EUnet Austria was the leading Internet provider in the business customer segment. EUnet Austria played in the Austrian market a greater role than EUnet Germany in the German market, which can be seen from the fact that the turnover of the population converted in EUnet Austria was about 5 times as high. 1994 EUnet Austria acquired a 40 % share of the ping.at, the first Internet provider for the mass market in Austria. In 1996 EUnet in an exchange of shares 100 % of ping.at which has been integrated on 26 September 1997 in the EUnet Austria.

EUnet in Switzerland

The EUnet AG was founded on September 8, 1994 having been operated for 3 years EUnet services as a "profit center " in the chuug (Swiss Unix Users Group). The spin-off was made possible by lifting the telecommunications monopoly for data services in Switzerland, before the offer of chuug was tolerated but could not be developed commercially.

The EUnet AG was the first commercial provider of Internet access in Switzerland and the EUnet offer the chuug 1991 was one of the first opportunities in Europe to get Internet access outside the academic environment.

EUnet International

1996 EUnet Austria, Belgium EUnet, EUnet Czech Republic, EUnet Finland, France EUnet, EUnet Norway, Switzerland EUnet was incorporated into the newly founded EUnet International Group ( EUnet International BV, Amsterdam as an operating company ). EUnet International acquired or founded in the wake EUnet Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Luxembourg.

EUnet International was acquired on March 26, 1998 by Qwest and introduced on 13 April 1999 in the company KPNQwest, where the name EUnet was abandoned. To KPNQwest belonged in Germany the Xlink Internet Service GmbH

In Austria the end of 2004 was the EUnet brand revived, and there are various providers like Tiscali Austria and ATnet were summarized by the owner The Jordan Company. In 2006 the company was taken over by eTel, and the EUnet brand again disappeared from the market. In December 2006, the Telekom Austria acquiring eTel for a purchase price of approximately agreed. EUR 90 million, which the authorities accept in April 2007.
