Eupalinos

Eupalinos (also Eupalinus ) of Megara was an ancient Greek engineer who built the Tunnel of Samos, which was probably completed in 550-530 BC. When the second known tunnel in history which was built in Gegenortvortrieb and the first in which this was done by a carefully prepared plan, the tunnel is considered a masterpiece of ancient engineering. With 1036 meters length of Eupalinos tunnel was also the longest tunnel of its time. He is currently accessible only to a length of 150 m to the public.

The Greek historian Herodotus described in his Histories ( 3.60 ) short tunnel and designated Eupalinos of Megara, son of Naustrophos, as its builder. It is alleged that at Eupalinos to the first hydraulic engineer in history, whose name has been handed down to posterity. Furthermore, however, is known about the identity of the Eupalinos nothing.
