Euphemia (empress)

Euphemia ( † before 527) was the wife of the ( Eastern ) Roman emperor Justin I.

It should have been originally a barbarian slave. Her name was probably originally Lupicinia and was only slightly formed, but she took her role as Augusta very seriously. According to the Suda, she was pious and supported churches. Likewise, she stood with the Bishop of Rome in correspondence. She died before her husband, and only by her death paved the way for the connection between Justin's nephew Peter and Theodora.
