Euphorbia palustris

Marsh Spurge (Euphorbia palustris)

The Marsh Spurge (Euphorbia palustris) is a flowering plant in the genus Euphorbia (Euphorbia ) from the family of the spurge family ( Euphorbiaceae ).

Description and occurrence

The Swamp milkweed is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches the stature heights of up to 1.5 meters. The flowering period extends from May to June.

The natural range of the species extends from Europe to Asia to the south-eastern Siberia and the Altai Mountains.

The Swamp milkweed is one of the few milkweed species that can grow on very wet soils. As marsh -loving plant it was formerly found very frequently along all major river valleys such as the Danube, Elbe and Rhine. Today their local distribution is, however, declined sharply through expansions and agricultural use. The Swamp milkweed grows on almost all sufficiently moist soils.

In Austria, the swamp milkweed occurs in lowland forests and in wet, nutrient-rich meadows and reed beds in the provinces of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland and Upper Austria is rare. The species is considered here as endangered and threatened in the northern foothills of the Alps as extinction.
