EuroBasket 1979

The 21 European Basketball Championship of Men ( officially: Euro Basket 1979) was held from 9 to 19 June 1979 in Italy. After three unsuccessful attempts, the last Soviet team was able to total the twelfth time secure the gold medal. Silver went to Israel, bronze was won by defending champion of Yugoslavia.

Venues

Venues were Mestre, Siena, Gorizia and Turin.

Preliminary round

The first round was carried out in three groups of four teams. The winner of the match was awarded two points, the loser one point. Stand a game at the end of regulation time draw, so there was extension. In case of equality, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The two first and second position in their group were set for the final round and had EM -Platz 6 already secure. The remaining teams played in the placement round at the 7th European Championship Course.

Placement Round

All teams that had missed in their preliminary round group the top two spots for the next round, played in a single group to the 7 EM space. This was awarded to the winner of the placement round, decided the further order of the EM- seats 8 to 12. So the runner-up was automatically EM- eighth, the third-place finisher was awarded the 9 EM- rank, etc.. Results of the meetings that took place in the first round, were taken with the placement round.

Final round

All first and second place of the preliminary round groups played in a group for a place in the finals, for their participation, in turn, rank one or two was necessary. While analogous to rank three and four the game participation to the bronze medal meant the fifth and Sechtplatzierte the final round of the automatically assigned EM Rank 5 and 6 the results of the meetings that took place in the first round, were in the final round taken.

The third and fourth placed the Final Round group played at EM bronze.
