EuroBasket 1989

The 26th European Basketball Championship of Men ( officially: Euro Basket 1989) was held from June 20 to 25, 1989 in Zagreb, in present-day Croatia. European champion hosts Yugoslavia before the defending champions from Greece. The bronze medal secured in his last European Championships the record winner from the USSR.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was played in two groups of four teams. The winner of the match was awarded two points, the loser one point. Stand a game at the end of regulation time draw, so there was extension. In case of equality, the direct comparison decided against each other.

The first two teams in each group qualified for the semi-finals and had EM- 4th place already secure, the remaining teams played in the final round to EM- 5th place

All teams that had missed the first two places for the subsequent semi-final in their first round group, played by EM Square Played 5 was a knock- on cross against an opponent from the other group.

Place 1 to 4

The respective first and second placed teams from the two preliminary groups played for the European title. It was played in KO system via cross against an opponent from the other group.
