Europahaus

The House of Europe is - as well as neighboring Germany House - an office building in Berlin's Kreuzberg district, Stresemannstraße 90-94. The House Germany in the hitch Road 20 is listed as a historic landmark.

History

The urban design competition for the entire building complex won the architecture firm of Richard Bielenberg and Josef Moser, the reaction thereof with the Germany house ( south adjacent ) began (1926, nor expressionistic ). Architect Otto Firle followed by the Europe House in the style of New Objectivity. The construction was begun in the late 1920s and completed in 1931.

The building has ten floors with a total of 35,000 m² of floor space. The first tenant was founded in 1919, nitrogen syndicate GmbH ( 4th to 10th floor).

The house was known primarily for its large neon signs for businesses Odol and Allianz Insurance, what in the city was a major attraction for its time. A neon sign of the company Blaupunkt out recently that was located until 2005 on the facade of the Europe House, is now in possession of the letter Museum in Berlin.

During the Second World War, the European house was damaged, so extensive restoration measures were required.

The building, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the former hitchhikers station, houses, among other things, in four floors of the head office of the Development Assistance Ministry, a contact point of the Robert Koch Institute and the Water and Shipping Directorate East and the office of the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance.

In Germany had the country house the League of the displaced their offices until the end of 1999 the financial support of the federal adjusted. It was established as the site of the approved by the Federal Government Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation. Early 2013 the gastronomic establishments were closed on the ground floor.
