European Audiovisual Observatory

The European Audiovisual Observatory (short: OBS, French: Observatoire Europeen de l' Audiovisual ) deals with the collection and dissemination of information about the European audiovisual media. It is a European institution, founded in December 1992 and is part of the public law of Europe. At its 39 member states and the European Union represented by the European Commission are involved.

Statute and mission

The Statute is set as the purpose is to promote the flow of information within the audiovisual industry and the overall picture of the market and greater transparency. It should pay particular attention to ensuring reliability, compatibility and comparability of the information, the Information Agent.

These objectives are to be achieved by collecting, editing and creation of information and statistics on the audiovisual sector in its 39 member states (in particular legal, economic and program information). To this end, various databases are developed which allow the user groups easy access to information. At the time of August 2012, the access to the following databases is possible:

  • MAVISE - database of TV companies and TV channels in the European Union
  • LUMIERE - database of movie admissions in Europe
  • IRIS Merlin - Database on legal information relevant to the audiovisual sector in Europe
  • KORDA - Database on public funding for the film and audiovisual sector in Europe
  • PERSKYVorlage: Web archive / Maintenance / Nummerierte_Parameter - List of Television Channels in Europe

Target groups

The target group of the European Audiovisual Observatory are professionals in the audiovisual sector: producers, distributors, exhibitors, broadcasters and providers of other media services, employees of international organizations in the audiovisual sector, decision makers within the various media agencies, national and European legislators, journalists, scientists, lawyers, investors, and consultant.

Structure

The Executive Director of the European Audiovisual Observatory conducts a multicultural team from several European countries. Organizationally, the Observatory is divided into two departments, one for the Department for Information on Markets and Financing, on the other hand, the Department for Legal Information

The institutions shall be: the Executive Council and the Advisory Committee, and there are a Finance Committee composed of the representatives of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe states that are members of the Observatory at the same time, and of representatives of the other members of the Observatory.

Seat

The European Audiovisual Observatory has its headquarters in Strasbourg.
