European Chess Union

The European Chess Union ( ECU, dt European Chess Association ) sees itself as an association of European chess with headquarters in Belgrade.

Objectives

The objectives of the ECU are the coordination of member associations, the organization of European Championships and representing the interests of European chess against the FIDE.

History and organizational structure

The ECU was founded in 1985 on the occasion of the FIDE Congress in Graz. Its first president was the Swede Rolf Littorin. He was succeeded in 1986 Kurt Jungwirth, who held the office until 1998. At the beginning, the ECU had to deal with resistors from the Soviet Union and by the leadership of FIDE. After the end of the Soviet Union the ECU succeeded but very quickly the chess unification of continental Europe. The ECU today belong to all European Chess Federations, including Turkey, Israel and the Caucasus states.

The highest organ of the ECU is the General Assembly, in which each member association shall have one vote. They shall meet at least once a year and elects the Executive Board ( "Board " ), which is led by a president. The daily business takes an Appointed by the Board Secretary.   • European Cup for club teams ( " European Club Cup" )
  • Team championships for member federations (for men and women separately )
  • Seniors team championships for member federations
  • Youth Team Championships for Member Federations ( U18, boys and girls separately )
