European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism

The European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism (August 23 ) ( engl. European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism ) is the European Day of Remembrance for the victims of totalitarian dictatorships in Europe in the 20th century.

The Memorial was originally developed by the Prague Declaration (3 June 2008), which was signed among others by Václav Havel, Joachim Gauck and numerous members of the European Parliament, proposed, and is reminiscent of the Molotov -Ribbentrop Pact.

On September 23, 2008 409 Members of the European Parliament have signed a statement in support of the establishment of Memorial Day. On 2 April 2009 a resolution on the proclamation of the day with 533 votes was ( contra 44 and 33 abstentions).
